Perry St - Heritage Alterations + Additions // Mudgee NSW

CAARCH were engaged to design alterations and additions to an existing, historic dwelling in Mudgee, NSW. The reinterpretation of the existing home to provide contemporary living spaces formed the foundation for the programmatic response of the building whilst remaining sensitive to the streetscape and built context. Robust and economical external materials are incorporated throughout the building both in response to budget but also the historical context and existing building. Proportions of the existing house established datum lines which inform the division between the new brickwork & cladding. Whilst new materiality is in keeping with the existing, a shift to a monochrome palette reflects a clear departure.

The new works maximise sustainable initiatives. The courtyard & high level windows promote winter solar access to the brick and concrete interiors, whilst northern overhangs & strategic planting provide passive shading. Natural ventilation is introduced through operable louvres and cross ventilation.
